Roofing Types

Asphalt Shingles:

By far, the greatest advantage of composition shingles roofing is its relatively low upfront cost. This is the most affordable roofing option in the short term, which is why so many homeowners favor it. In most cases, a properly installed asphalt shingles roof will provide your home with a decent level of protection with an average lifespan of 12 to 17 years, all for a modest upfront cost.

A shingle roof system installation also takes much less time and expertise than the installation of other materials, such as metal and tile roofs. The relatively easy installation process results in reduced labor costs and, therefore, a less expensive overall roofing system.

There are three broad types of asphalt shingles to choose from when installing a new roof or reroofing. Each has its advantages and drawbacks. And, in addition to the style/design options, there are up to 20-25 different colors from which to choose. With such a wide range of available options, you are sure to find a perfect match.

3-tab shingles

3-tab shingles are the most economical and most commonly used in some areas. Despite their name, these shingles are a single basemat covered with mineral granules with three evenly-spaced cutouts at the bottom. The tabs make each shingle appear as if it were three distinct pieces when installed correctly. While they're not the most attractive option, 3-tab shingles can be installed quickly, and they can last for decades.

Dimensional or architectural shingles

Dimensional or architectural shingles are similar to 3-tab shingles because they're a single mat that appears like separate shingles when installed. However, dimensional shingles are multi-layered, which adds an element of durability. Their main selling point is how much better they look than conventional 3-tab shingles. They're also a lot more durable by their very nature, and some offer warranties of up to 30 years. Unfortunately, they also carry a higher upfront cost of about 20% more than 3-tab shingles.

Premium or luxury shingles

Premium or luxury shingles are the third type, and they're designed to replicate natural roofs such as slate or cedar shake. They can faithfully reproduce the appearance of a roof costing several times their price. They're not ideal for every property since they're considerably heavier than 3-tab shingles, but if a home can bear the weight, they're more resistant to wind damage.

Tile Roofing:

Tile roofs are among the most attractive money can buy. As the name implies, it consists of overlapping tiles attached individually to the solid surface of the roof. Tile roofing typically requires a much more experienced contractor than asphalt roofing. Tile roofing is divided into style and material options for the tiles.

Among the most popular style choices are:

Spanish style

These are highly recognizable, with each type featuring an "S" shape to create a pattern.

Scalloped tiles

Another typical pattern, these tiles have a curved bottom edge and form a pattern like fish scales when installed.

French tiles

One of the more robust styles, French tiles have a double-flute design and interlock for a low-profile look.

There are many options in terms of materials as well. Each brings something to the table, and we can help you understand why some may work better for your roof than others.

Among the most popular material choices are:

Clay tiles

Clay tiles are a common and traditional option, being both affordable and readily available.

Concrete tiles

Concrete roof tiles are also frequently used. Concrete tiles can be factory-molded to most styles, even going so far as simulating wood or slate. They are shorter-lived than clay tiles but highly resistant to wind damage.

Natural slate tiles

Beautiful and durable, natural slate tiles offer a decent variety of colors and texture options, but they tend to be among the most expensive.

Metal tiles

Metal tiles are often used in projects where the weight of the roof needs to meet specific standards. Metal tiles are thinner and more lightweight than other types, but they're no less durable or versatile.
