Roofing 101: Learning Basic Roof Terminology

Basic home roof

Homeowners should understand the basic terms and reduce their chances of purchasing the wrong items or getting scammed.

Homeowners who need to repair or replace roofs usually feel overwhelmed by the terminology involved. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to learn everything about a roof in a short time. But homeowners can and should understand the basic terms and reduce their chances of purchasing the wrong items or getting scammed.

Please keep reading to learn more about basic roof terminology.

Roof deck (roof sheathing)

A roof deck, also called roof sheathing, is the surface that represents the roof’s framing. This is the surface to which roofing materials are applied. When this part is damaged or rotten, it usually requires a replacement because it may not be able to support the materials installed on it.

Drip edge

A drip edge is a metal strip installed along the roof’s edges. Its purpose is to allow water to run off the roof, thus preventing it from getting underneath the roofing components. According to the building code, a drip edge is mandatory. If a roof doesn’t have it, it most likely can’t pass the home inspection.

Roof underlayment (felt)

Roof underlayment is a protective layer for the roof deck. It’s usually made of asphalt-saturated materials and installed between the roof deck and shingles. The underlayment is designed to protect the roof deck from the elements. Since this component is essential in keeping the entire roof structure in excellent condition, homeowners should consider investing in the high-quality underlayment.

Roof valley

A roof valley represents the point of intersection of two roof slopes. The primary purpose of roof valleys is to allow the water to run off towards the gutter. Because of that exposure to water, roof valleys are more prone to damage and leaks. Therefore, they need to be protected with different materials and maintained regularly. In addition, leaves and debris can often get stuck in roof valleys, potentially causing the water to back up, get under the shingles, and damage the roof structure.

Roof flashing

Roof flashing is thin metal pieces that direct water from different roof components towards the gutters. Most often, these metal pieces are installed around chimneys, vents, roof valleys, and other areas where leaks can occur.

Fascia

A roof fascia is a flat board attached to a roof’s side. It repels moisture, protects shingles, and supports the gutter. Plus, this roof component gives a roof a finished appearance and enhances its style. Fascia is also called the roof edge or eaves edge.

Shingles

Shingles are thin, rectangular pieces of composite, asphalt or other roofing materials applied over the entire roof. They protect the roof structure from outdoor elements and prevent damage. Plus, stylish shingles can enhance a home’s exterior.

Since there are numerous types of shingles, they come in a wide range of prices.
